Announcing the latest release of Comsof Fiber 21.2

The latest release of Comsof Fiber, 21.2, has some fantastic new features and tweaks to help make your design experience more intuitive and in line with the industry standard. In this release you will be able to move structures if survey data reveals a better placement, you’ll also be able to configure multi-port terminals – an easier and faster to deploy a fiber access network because you don’t need to do any splicing. Forced structures

Access structures can be placed in the design for many reasons: to respect the drum length of a cable, to respect the blowing distance in a duct, etc. The software follows the rules configured by the user when placing these structures. However, during a survey, it may become clear that the suggested location cannot be used. As a planner, you then want to move that structure but make sure that the network can still be built.

In 21.2 we made it possible to add, move and remove access structures in the design. You can also change the type and identifier of the structure. The software considers these forced structures during a calculation and makes sure that the network is still compliant with the design rules.

Label configuration

In 21.1 we introduced a mechanism to automatically generate labels for equipment. In this version, it is now possible to configure the label rules via the web UI.

Multi-Port Terminals

With Comsof Fiber we are following the innovations in the fiber industry. One of these innovations is the usage of Multi-Port Terminals (MPTs). These make it easier and faster to deploy a fiber access network because you don’t need to do any splicing.

In version 21.2 we improved the way these MPTs can be configured with the software. It is also possible to do a design where multi-port terminals are used in combination with a shared cable strategy. In this scenario, different closures are fed from the distribution point with a single cable, and the tails feeding the MPTs start at these closures.

Multi-Dwelling Units

Large MDUs are typically connected in a different way than single dwelling units. In version 21.2 we added extra options to categorize demand points and specify different fiber and equipment rules.

It is now possible to specify the layer a demand point should be connected in. It’s also easier to configure a different amount of fibers per home and per building depending on the home count in a building. And you can choose to place a specific closure for certain demand points.

ESRI FileGDB

We now support ESRI FileGDB as a new file format to load input data from and store a workspace in. This will make it easier to work with our software if you are using Comsof Fiber on ESRI ArcGIS Pro.

Other improvements

  • Extra file supported in initialize and update workspace: aerial connections and homes
  • Command to automatically merge linked or overlapping homes in demand points while retaining the input homes.
  • There are extra options for the pole creation command to improve the creation of poles on existing aerial connections.
  • Fiber bundles are used more efficiently at aggregation points when there are multiple cables that could share the same bundle.
  • Fibers and splices of non-active fibers are now available in the output data.
  • Control equipment for branching/tapering on shared cable. Choose which type of closure and access structure needs to be placed.
  • Configuration option to place a protection pipe on crossings. The correct amount of pipes will be placed on the crossing to make sure all the cables and ducts can fit.
  • Option to place spare ducts in a particular layer.
  • Option to place spare ducts for certain demand points.
  • We switched the placement order of structures for street crossings, blowing distance, and drum length to reduce the number of structures in the design.
  • A new duct algorithm is used for common ducts
