The German authorities realize they will benefit from a strong fiber network to further boost its economy. In urban, as well as in rural areas. That’s why, a few years ago, the country upped federal funding to boost fiber penetration, especially in rural areas. TÜV Rheinland is assisting the authorities in planning and designing these FTTx networks.
“The past two years, we did calculations for about 100 local projects all around Germany”, explains TÜV Rheinland Consultant Marius Humpert. “In a later stage we also executed fiber to the building calculations for the whole of the country. As you can imagine, both ways of working where quite different.”
“Within the local projects, we had to consider some restrictions. For instance, some communities asked us to exclude the 5 percent most expensive connections, for financial reasons. The challenges were different for the countrywide calculations, mainly due to size issues.”
“Comsof Fiber has been an established software at TÜV Rheinland for many years. We have been using Comsof Fiber Simulator and Designer for both local and national projects”, continues Marius.

Quick and meaningful assistance
“As the countrywide calculations were tough, we needed some assistance from Comsof to cope with the scale of the project”, says Marius. “Bram did a very good job assisting us. He was always quick to provide a solution for an issue we were facing. For example, we had an enquiry at 5 pm, and the next day at 9 am Bram already provided an answer.”
Learning by doing
“When I started at TÜV Rheinland, I had a lot of GIS knowledge, but not as much FTTx experience. So Comsof Fiber provided a great start, not only because it’s GIS based, also because of its user friendliness. The ability to see the different design layers like ducts, trenches, poles, was a helpful asset for example. I was able to learn a lot about FTTx planning, partly thanks to the structure, the clearness of the software.”
“Lastly, the tool is time saving. It’s hard to compare with other methods as we have been using it for such a long time. But we were able to finish about 100 projects in a very short time span. We completed some of these projects in a week. This would have taken far longer without Comsof Fiber.”
Favorite feature: cost-coverage calculation
“Some local communities didn’t want 100 percent of coverage. So this feature proved to be very useful”, says Marius. It allows you to compare multiple cost coverage scenarios in one simulation. It starts with 100 percent coverage as an ‘ideal’ scenario. Next you can calculate the desired coverage percentage. For example, if you want 90 percent coverage, the software will connect the 90 percent most cost-efficient homes.
